Play Mahjong Solitaire Online for Free
Enjoy free Mahjong Solitaire, clear the board in full screen
Mahjong Solitaire takes the iconic tiles of traditional Mahjong and turns them into a peaceful one-player puzzle. Instead of battling opponents, your goal is to match and remove tiles until the board is clear. It’s calm and quiet on the surface, but there’s real thinking underneath, especially once the board starts to tighten. You can play it here, full screen right in your browser, with no signup and no downloads.
How to Play Mahjong Solitaire
Each game begins with 144 tiles stacked in layers in the well-known classic Turtle layout. Your goal is to clear them all by finding matching pairs. Not every tile can be used right away, only the ones that are “free,” meaning no tile rests on top and at least one long side is open. Tiles are removed in pairs and they must be identical, except for the bonus groups. Here’s how the tile types break down:
- Suits: Bamboo, Characters and Dots
- Honors: Winds and Dragons
- Bonus Tiles: Flowers and Seasons
See Figure 1: in setup A the two Dots tiles are identical, so they match. In setup B they’re both Dots but the values differ, so no match.
Bonus tiles work differently. Any Flower matches any Flower and any Season matches any Season, but you can’t mix them. In setup C both tiles are Seasons (recognizable by the red numbers in the top right corner), so they are a match. In setup D one tile is a Season and the other is a Flower (recognizable by the blue number in the top left corner), so they can’t be paired.
Built-in Tools and Controls
If you ever run out of options, use the Hint button to see a valid pair, Shuffle to mix remaining tiles or Undo to take back your last move, all from the button panel. Keyboard shortcuts are available too, so you can undo, reshuffle and switch layouts with a tap. For the full breakdown, see our complete Mahjong Solitaire tutorial.
Layouts and Progress
There are 18 layouts to choose from, ranging from easy open boards to more layered challenges. You can try them all and your progress is saved automatically in your browser. Close the page and come back anytime; your current game will still be waiting.
4 Strategies That Actually Help
Want to improve your clears? Start with these proven tips:
- Clear the tallest stacks early: They hide the most tiles and are the easiest to lose track of.
- Focus on the edges: Removing side tiles frees up more moves and stops rows from locking.
- Don’t rush easy pairs: Save them for later when the board gets tight.
- Plan two steps ahead: Look beyond the next match and think about what it opens up.
