- The Tableau: This is where the main action happens. There are seven columns, with the number of cards increasing from one in the first column to seven in the last. Only the top card in each column is face-up.
- The Stock: After dealing the Tableau, the remaining cards go into the Stock pile. You draw from this pile when you're stuck.
- The Foundations: These four piles—one for each suit—are where you’ll stack cards in ascending order, from Ace to King.
How to Play and Move Cards
In the Tableau, the key is alternating colors and building sequences in descending order. Cards must alternate between red and black suits—such as Hearts or Diamonds on Spades or Clubs—to form valid sequences. For example, as you can see in Figure 2 below, you can place the red 7 on the black 8. You can also move entire sequences as long as they follow this rule. Whenever you move a face-up card, the next one flips over—this opens up new moves and helps you progress.
When you can't make any more moves in the Tableau, draw cards from the Stock pile. Depending on the game settings, you may draw one or three cards at a time. But don’t rush—sometimes it’s better to hold off on drawing from the Stock until you've exhausted all possible moves in the Tableau.
Building the Foundations
Once an Ace appears, move it to the Foundation pile. From there, you’ll build in ascending order—2, 3, and so on—until you’ve placed the King of that suit. Keep in mind that only Kings can fill empty spaces in the Tableau, so use these opportunities wisely.

- Maximize Moves Before Using the Stock: Before drawing from the Stock pile, ensure you've made all possible moves in the Tableau. This maximizes your chances of uncovering necessary cards without relying on the Stock.
- Plan Ahead: Think carefully before making a move. Sometimes moving one card can block other important moves. Consider the potential impact on future moves, especially when deciding between multiple options.
- Don't Rush to Build Foundations: While it's tempting to move cards to the Foundations as soon as possible, sometimes keeping them in the Tableau can help you uncover more cards and create additional sequences.
