Simple, Satisfying and Surprisingly Strategic — Free Golf Solitaire Done Right!

Golf Solitaire has nothing to do with clubs or a tiny white ball (though our mascot above might try to convince you otherwise). The name comes from the scoring, just like in real golf, lower is better. Golf Solitaire has been around since the early 1900s and is still a favorite today. It’s a simple, clever game where you build sequences to clear the board. With all cards face-up and a wraparound rule that lets Kings go to Aces, the gameplay is fast, strategic and fun. Getting to Know Golf Solitaire

At the start, 35 cards are dealt into 7 columns of 5 cards each. They are all face-up, so nothing is hidden. The rest form the stockpile, with one card turned over to start the foundation pile. Here’s a breakdown of the setup:
- Tableau (1): 7 columns with 5 face-up cards each. Only the bottom card in each column can be played to the foundation.
- Stockpile (2): Holds the 17 remaining cards. One card is flipped at the start to begin the foundation pile. If no moves are left, flip the next card from the stockpile to continue playing.
- Foundation (3): Build sequences here by playing cards from the tableau, one rank higher or lower than the current card.
How to Play Golf Solitaire

Your goal is to move every card from the tableau to the foundation, one at a time. You can play a card if it’s one rank higher or lower than the current foundation card. Suits don’t matter. So if there’s a 9 on the foundation, you can place an 8 or a 10, as shown in Figure 2. That’s basically it! The game is won when the entire tableau and foundation are cleared. The stockpile doesn’t need to be empty.
We also use the modern wraparound rule, which means Kings can be placed on Aces and Aces on Kings. This small but powerful rule raises the win rate to around 95% and keeps the game smooth and satisfying.
You only get one pass through the stockpile but when you reach the final stock card, you can use the Undo function to try a different strategy. If you're stuck, use the Hint button for a little help.
Golf Solitaire Strategy and Tips
To win at Golf Solitaire, you need more than luck. Here are a few tips to help you play smarter:
- Wait before using the stock. The fewer cards you draw from the stockpile, the better. Use it only when no other moves are left.
- Look for combos. Try to chain cards in both directions (up and down) for longer streaks. For example, when the foundation card is 6, look for plays like this: 6 → 5 → 4 → 5 → 6 → 7.
- Check what’s underneath. If you have two of the same card, see which one reveals the more useful card below.
